Dessers, Lookman are Nigerian top scorers in 2024, joint 3rd in Africa and among top 50 in the World

Glasgow Rangers Nigerian forward, Cyriel Dessers and Atalanta of Italy Europa League hero, Ademola Lookman are the two Nigerians who top scored in 2024, according to the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post.

The CIES Football Observatory, a research group within the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), specialises in the statistical analysis of football.

In its update on the 100 players who scored the most goals in official club or national team matches (senior, U23 or U21) over the last year, the two Nigerians are listed 45th and 46th respectively albeit they scored 29 goals each with Dessers minutes to goal ratio put at 117 while that of Lookman is 140.

Six out of Lookman’s 29 goals came in Super Eagles games, including the three he scored at the Africa Cup of Nations (two in round of 16 and one in quarterfinals) to propel Nigeria to the finals while five came in the Europa League including the hat-trick that ensured Atalanta became European Champions for the first time in their history.

Liverpool forward, Mo Salah is the top scoring African on the list with 31 goals and a minute per goal ratio of 130 with Borussia Dortmund’s Guinean player, Serhou Guirassy is second with 30 goals and a minute per goal ratio of 120 minutes.

Meanwhile, Sporting CP’s Swede Viktor Gyökeres tops the list with no fewer than 64 goals: 54 for his club and 10 at national team level.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City and Norway) and Harry Kane (Bayern Munich and England) complete the podium with 52 and 47 goals respectively.

In terms of goal frequency, the top three are Irishman Garbhan Coughlan of Cashmere Technical in New Zealand (one goal every 43 minutes), Japan’s Tomoyuki Doi of Geylang United in Singapore, and Uruguay’s Martín Cauteruccio of Sporting Cristal in Peru.
