AFCON 2025 Equals Goal Record, Eyes Historic Break in Morocco

The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 has reached a historic milestone. After the quarterfinal stage, which produced 10 goals, the overall tally climbed to 119, equaling the record set at the previous edition in Côte d’Ivoire.

Unlike the Ivorian tournament, Morocco’s AFCON still has four matches left: two semifinals, the third‑place playoff, and the final. That gives this edition a strong chance of becoming the most prolific in the competition’s history.

The high scoring reflects the attacking style that has defined the tournament. The group stage delivered goals at a rapid pace, and the knockout rounds have continued in the same vein.

Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt have been among the biggest contributors, with star forwards Victor Osimhen, Brahim Diaz, and Mohamed Salah leading the charge.

Traditionally criticized for defensive play, AFCON has in recent years shifted toward more open, attacking football. Côte d’Ivoire 2023 set the benchmark with 119 goals, but Morocco 2025 now looks certain to surpass it.

Fans and analysts are already hailing this edition as one of the most entertaining ever. Beyond the numbers, the drama and attacking flair have boosted Morocco’s reputation as host.

The final stages will decide not only the champion but also whether AFCON 2025 writes a new chapter in the competition’s scoring history.
