Amusan, Brume in danger of not qualifying for Diamond League final, Enekwechi still in contention
World 100m hurdles record holder at 12.12, Tobi Amusan and African long jump record holder, Ese Brume are in danger of not qualifying for the final of the 2024 Diamond League final scheduled to hold next month in Brussels, Belgium.
In 2023, Amusan successfully defended her title for the second straight year to become the second woman to win the discipline three straight times while Brume was second on her debut in the final, losing on countback to Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta after both jumped 6.85m.
While Amusan still has a very bright chance of qualifying with four 100m hurdles races remaining before the final, starting with the Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 22, Brume, with zero point, has just one more opportunity to not only make her season’s debut in athletics’ premier one-day series, but must also win and hope those who have seven points and less do not make it to Rome, venue of the final long jump event before the final.
Amusan redeemed her 2023 season with a successful defense of her title after the traumatic experience she went through with the unfortunate and wrong allegation of three whereabouts failure which affected her World Athletics Championships title defense in Budapest.
The 27 year old went to Eugene, Oregon, venue of her greatest triumph in the sport, to win her third straight Diamond League 100m hurdles title.
The Nigerian will be motivated to end her season on a high after a rather underwhelming trip to Paris for the Olympics.
She will be looking to become the second woman to win the 100m hurdles four straight times after USA woman, Dawn Nelson-Harper. She is 10th in the standing with four points from her fifth place finish in Xiamen, China on the opening day of the series. She was disqualified in the second 100m hurdles race in Suzhou, still in China.
Meanwhile, Shot Putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will be aiming to become the first man to compete in the final of the Diamond League series.
The Paris Olympics finalist is sixth in the standing with the six points he garnered for finishing third in Eugene last May and will hope to compete in the three remaining shot put event in Silesia, Rome and Zurich.
