Brazil set new World Cup record to seal round of 16 passage
Selecao gets first back-to-back group wins since 2006
Brazil defeated Switzerland 1-0 courtesy of a Casemiro strike to not only seal their passage into the 2022 World Cup round of 16 but also set a World Cup group stage record.
The Manchester United midfielder hit a deflected strike beyond Yann Sommer to make it six points from a possible six and put Brazil into the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Brazil rode their luck at times but eventually held out for a second straight group stage win.
It’s the first time they’ve started a World Cup campaign with wins in their opening two games since the successful 2002 campaign, and they will hope that it is an omen for future glory in this World Cup.
Monday’s victory is the 14th in 17 games since they lost 2-1 in their final group game against Norway at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille, France in 1998.
Brazil will be seeking another 100% group stage record for the first time since the 2006 World Cup in Germany when they face Cameroon in their final group game on Friday iconic Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar.
The Selecao defeated Croatia, Australia and Japan in group stage game in 2006 as a carry over of the 100% record they recorded four years earlier in Korea /Japan, beating Turkey, China and Costa Rica before coasting home to their fifth World Cup win (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002).
