CHAN Eagles defender Ngenge: Joining Leeds United is a big step for me

Leeds United’s Academy has strengthened its ranks with the signing of highly rated Nigerian centre-back Leonard Ngenge, who has penned a deal running until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
The 22-year-old defender expressed his delight at making the move to West Yorkshire, describing it as the biggest step of his career so far.
‘I am excited,’ Ngenge told the club’s official website. ‘It is a big step for me. It is the biggest step of my career right now and I hope to start perfectly. It is a huge opportunity and hopefully I get to utilise my opportunity and do better for the club, represent the club and be part of the great things they set out to achieve.’
The left-footed defender described his style of play as combative and reliable. ‘I like to show my tackling abilities, getting the body in the way and doing everything to cover the goalkeeper,” he explained.
Already capped twice at senior level for the Super Eagles, Ngenge admitted those experiences have shaped his development. ‘It was also a great opportunity. I worked hard. The coaches pushed me back at home. It was a great part of that. I learned a lot down there.’
Ngenge featured twice for the CHAN Eagles at the African Nations Championship last year and previously played for Remo Stars and Ikorodu City in Nigeria. With his move to Leeds, he hopes to continue his progression and eventually break into the Premier League.
