Enugu state sets stage for final farewell to football icon Christian Chukwu

The Enugu State Government, in partnership with the family of late football legend Coach Christian Chukwu, has officially constituted a Central Planning Committee (CPC) to oversee his burial arrangements and ensure a fitting tribute to his legacy.

The committee, chaired by Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, and Barr. Alexander Egbo as secretary, comprises respected figures from both government and the sporting community. Their mission: to honour the man affectionately known as ‘Chairman’, whose impact on Nigerian football remains unmatched.

‘Christian Chukwu was a towering figure in Nigerian football whose exploits on and off the pitch will forever be celebrated,’ said Ekweremadu while announcing the committee’s formation.

Chukwu, who captained Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980, also led Enugu Rangers to multiple domestic and continental triumphs. As a coach, he guided the Super Eagles and mentored generations of players, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.

The funeral programme includes a Service of Songs, Night of Tributes, Colloquium, Novelty Match, and a Thanksgiving Service, culminating in his burial at his hometown in Obe, Nkanu West LGA, on August 16, 20252.
