Favour Ofili runs 7.21 to finish third, Godson Brume sets 60m, 200m personal best

Favour Ofili’s bid to follow in the footsteps of her friend, Rosemary Chukwuma and become the eighth Nigerian sprinter to run inside 7.10 in the 60m event failed to come to fruition as the Louisiana State University, LSU, student ran 7.21 to finish third at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic held at the Convention Centre in Alburquque, New Mexico on Saturday.

Chukwuma (Texas Tech University) ran 7.09 in the event a forthnight ago and all eyes were on Ofili to follow suit but the 20 year old barely managed to qualify for the final after her 7.25 run pushed her in as one of the two non-automatic qualifiers.

In the final, an obviously tired Ofili who a day earlier had stormed to another sub 22.60 (22.55) finish in the 200m could not, at least, replicate her feat of a year earlier at the same ground when she ran a 7.17 lifetime best.

In the men’s 60m, Godson Oghenebrume ran a new 6.69 lifetime best a day after setting another personal best in the 200m (21.35).

A day earlier, freshman Ella Onojuvwevwo clocked a huge 52.61 personal best in the 400m, earsing almost a second off of her previous best of 53.37. Her time puts her into LSU and Nigeria’s all-time top 10 list.
