National Council on Sports Approves Nigeria Anti-Doping Policy
The National Council on Sports, meeting in Calabar on Friday, has approved the development of a Nigeria Anti-Doping Policy.
The Council mandated the National Anti-Doping Committee (NADC) to lead the process with full cooperation from National Sports Federations and relevant government agencies at all levels.
It was further noted that the Nigeria Anti-Doping Centre has been designated as the coordinating agency for doping matters in the country, strengthening institutional oversight of anti-doping activities.
In passing the resolution, the Council highlighted Nigeria’s current compliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code, a significant improvement from its previous non-compliant status.
While this compliance ensures Nigeria avoids international sanctions, the central decision of the Council is the establishment of a clear national policy framework to guide anti-doping efforts going forward.
By remaining compliant, Nigeria has sidestepped sanctions that would have barred the country from hosting major international sporting events, prevented athletes from competing under the national flag, excluded representatives from governance roles in global sports bodies, cut off funding from WADA and other international organizations.
