Nigeria makes clean sweep of Discus throw medals for the second time in last four editions
Anumba wins gold with second farthest winning throw in Championships history
Nigeria made a clean sweep of Discus throw medals on the opening day of action at the 23rd African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon with the trio of Ashley Anumba, Obiageri Pamela Amaechi and defending champion, Chioma Onyekwere winning in that order.
Like she did at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta state in 2022, Anumba surprised her Nigerian compatriots by clinching the gold with her last round throw of 59.30m.
The mark is the second farthest winning throw in the history of the Championships after Chinwe Okoro’s Championships record setting throw of 59.79m in 2014 in Marrakech, Morocco.
Amaechi, the African leader in the event coming to the Championships threw 58.80m to settle for silver while Onyekwere’s dream of a third straight gold medal was not realized as she could only muster a last round throw of 57.96m.
It is now the second time Nigeria will be making a clean sweep of the medals on offer in the event after the trio of Nwanneka Okwelogu (gold), Chinwe Okoro (silver) and Onyekwere (bronze) first did in 2016 in Durban, South Africa.
It is also the third time a country will winning all three medals in Championships history after South Africa first did in 1993 and Nigeria in 2016 ad 2024.
Onyekwere has now won four medals in the championships made up of two gold and two bronze medals.
