Nigeria vs Gabon: Fireworks expected in Rabat as World Cup dreams hang in the balance

The stage is set for a thrilling showdown in Rabat as Nigeria and Gabon clash in a make or mar semi-final playoff for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match, scheduled for Thursday evening at the Complexe Sportif Prince Heritier Moulay Al Hassan, offers both teams a second chance at qualification after falling short in Africa’s grueling 23-month campaign.

Nigeria, six-time World Cup finalists, are desperate to avoid missing back-to-back tournaments, a scenario that would deny their current crop of stars the chance to shine on football’s grandest stage. Gabon, on the other hand, are chasing history, hoping to secure their first-ever appearance at the World Cup finals.

Both coaches, Eric Chelle of Nigeria and Thierry Mouyouma of Gabon, are expected to deploy attacking 4-3-3 formations to maximize the strengths of their squads.

Chelle, unbeaten in four qualifiers with Nigeria, is likely to rely on Stanley Nwabali in goal. With Olaoluwa Aina sidelined by injury and Semi Ajayi suspended, the defensive line may feature Benjamin Fredericks, captain William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Zaidu Sanusi. The midfield trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka will aim to control the tempo.

Leading the attack is Victor Osimhen, Africa’s 2023 Player of the Year, who scored six goals during the qualifiers. With 29 goals in 44 appearances for Nigeria and 160 goals in his club career, Osimhen remains one of the most lethal forwards in world football. He is expected to be flanked by Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman.

Gabon, who qualified as the best second runners-up across the nine groups, will look to veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for inspiration. The 36-year-old, currently with Olympique Marseille, has played for top clubs like Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.

His father, Pierre-François Aubameyang, once represented Gabon at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated by Nigeria.

Mouyouma’s lineup is expected to include Loyce Mbaba in goal, with Jacques Ekomie, Bruno Manga, Mick Omfia, and Anthony Oyono forming the backline. Guélor Kanga, Mario Lemina, and Didier Ndong will marshal the midfield, while Aubameyang leads the attack alongside Denis Bouanga and Noah Lemina.

Gabon’s strategy may hinge on quick, short passes to disrupt Nigeria’s rhythm, while Chelle remains tight-lipped about his tactical approach.

Historically, Nigeria have had the upper hand, winning five of their nine encounters with Gabon. Their last meeting in a World Cup qualifier in 2005 ended in a 2-0 victory for the Super Eagles.

Gabon’s only win came in 1989, a result that ultimately denied Nigeria a place at Italia ’90. Three matches have ended in draws, but Thursday’s clash must produce a winner, with the victor advancing to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in Sunday’s final.
