Osimhen named African Athlete of the Month for October

Victor Osimhen has been named the African Athlete of the Month for October 2025 by the Africa Sports Ventures Group (ASVG), following his electrifying performance in Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin.

The Super Eagles striker delivered a sensational hat-trick in the 4–0 victory on October 14, a result that not only propelled Nigeria into the World Cup playoffs but also reaffirmed Osimhen’s status as one of the most lethal forwards in world football.

His display in that match was a masterclass in modern attacking play, blending blistering pace, physical dominance, and clinical finishing. Each goal showcased a different facet of his game, from sharp movement in the box to composed execution under pressure.

It was a performance that resonated far beyond the pitch, igniting pride among fans across Africa and further solidifying his legacy as Nigeria’s all-time leading active scorer.

Osimhen’s October exploits saw him edge out a formidable list of nominees for the award.

Among them were Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour, who made history as Africa’s first gymnastics world champion; South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, who captained her nation to its first Women’s Cricket World Cup final; and Glenrose Xaba, the dominant force on the South African 10K circuit.

The African Athlete of the Month Award, relaunched in 2024 by ASVG Media, honors the continent’s most outstanding sports figures, those whose achievements inspire and elevate African excellence on the global stage.
