Udinese Coach Hails Maduka Okoye’s Crucial Role

Udinese Calcio manager Kosta Runjaic has hailed Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye as a vital figure in the club’s defensive setup, praising his composure, maturity, and growing influence within the team.

Okoye, who joined Udinese after a difficult spell at Watford, has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in Serie A, registering ten clean sheets and delivering decisive interventions that kept the Friulani competitive in several matches.

Runjaic described the Super Eagles shot‑stopper as ‘crucial for our defence,’ noting that his evolution is clear for all to see.

The German tactician highlighted Okoye’s resilience after a challenging start to the season, which included a suspension linked to a sports betting investigation.

‘We know how his season started; it’s not easy to prepare without being able to play, but he’s worked hard on himself,’ Runjaic said, adding that the goalkeeper has now reached the level he always expected.

Runjaic also revealed the club’s investment in Okoye’s development, pointing to regular conversations with sporting director Gökhan İnler and the close work of Udinese’s goalkeeping coaches.

‘Every player needs a different period to mature and reach their level. Now he’s playing calmly, focused, and always mentally present,’ he explained.

The coach expressed satisfaction with Okoye’s current form and hopes he can finish the season strongly.

‘I’m seeing the Maduka I want to see, and I hope he puts in two great performances in his last two games as well,’ Runjaic said.
