2023 Commonwealth Youth Games: Ogazi wins 400m title as Nigeria remains eight on medal table

Reigning African U18 400m champion, Samuel Uchenna Ogazi is the new Commonwealth Youth Games champion.

The 17 year old was expected to win the full lap race and he fulfilled erxpectations, running 46.99 to beat seven others including compatriots, Olanrewaju Olawole Erioulwa who ran 48.58 to finish seventh.

Ogazi, who turned 17 last May, will now join up with the senior team for the 19th World Athletics Championships scheduled to start next week in Budapest, Hungary.

Nigeria has now won three gold and a silver medal to move above Kenya as the second most successful African nation so far in the competition behind South Africa who have garnered six gold, three silver and three bronze medals to stay fourth on the medal table.
Track and field

Ogazi is the first male to win a medal for Nigeria at the championships while the female trio of Faith Okwose (gold in the 100m),
Agbo Destiny Nkemakonam (gold in the Discus Throw – F42-44 / F61-64) and Eyakpobeyan Justina (gold in 100m) have won three medals so far.
