2023 Laureus World Sports Awards: Amusan to know fate on May 8 in Paris
Reigning World 100m hurdles champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan could be the first Nigerian athlete to win the Laureus award when
the winners of the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards, the most prestigious honours in sport, will be unveiled in Paris on May 8.
Amusan has been nominated for the breakthrough of the year category alongside the quintet of two tennis stars, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, the USA duo of figure skater, Nathan Chen and goilfer, Scottie Scheffler with the Atlas of Morocco, the senior national team of Morocco completing the list.
The 25 year old made history last July as the first Nigerian track and field athlete to win a World outdoor title and the first to set a world outdoor record.
Amusan’s 12.12 seconds world record run is also the first sub 12.20 run by an athlete in the event.
The 2022 athletics season was a rollercoaster one for the University of Texas in El Paso, UTEP, graduate as she won in all the major competitions she participated in.
She successfully defended her Nigeria, African, Commonwealth Games and Diamond League titles, capping it with the first ever world outdoor title by a Nigerian.
Amusan will be looking forward to successfully defend her Diamond League and the World Athletics Championships’ titles later this year in addition to rewriting her World record.
