2023 SEC Outdoor Championships: Ashe and Oghenebrume go head to head for the ninth time
Reigning Nigeria 100m champion, Favour Ashe will go head to head with Godson Oghenebrume for the second time in the collegiate circuit and ninth time overall
when they line up in the final of the 100m event at 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships in Baton Rogue, Louisiana on Saturday.
The two Nigerians are among the eight men that raced into Saturday’s final with Ashe the fastest of the lot with his personal sason’s best time of 10.06.
The 21 year old has been drawn in lane five with Oghenebrume outside him in lane seven.
Ashe and Oghenebrume first clashed in the collegiate circuit in May 2022 with the former running 10.04 to win his first SEC championships 100m title while
Oghenebrume came in fifth in 10.16.
Ashe holds a 5-3 head to head lead over Oghenebrume and the pendulum is looking to swing in the Auburn University student’s favour as he is set to make it
back to back wins as SEC fastest man.
Oghenebrume however seems to be coming to the form that helped him beat Ashe twice in 2019, first at the Nigerian U20/U18 Championships in March and at the
Nigerian Championships four months later. The 19 year old Brume also triumphed over Ashe at the Nigerian trials in 2021.
Ashe has however won in their last three races including at the final of the Nigerian championships where he became the second Nigerian man to run inside 10
seconds (9.99) to win the title.
Meanwhile, Ella Onojuvwevwo failed to qualify for the women’s 400m final despite breaking 52 seconds for the first time in her career.
The 18 year old ran a lifetime best of 51.85 to finish 11th in the overall semifinals classification and has become the 27th Nigerian to run inside 52 seconds in the event.
