2024 USTAF New York City Grand Prix: Onyekwere extends head to head record to 9-4 against Amaechi
Reigning Commonwealth Games Discus throw champion, Chioma Onyekwere extended her head to head record against Obiageri Pamela Amaechi after finishing second at the USTAF New York City Grand Prix Saturday at the Ichan stadium in New York.
Amaechi came into the New York event as the national leader in the event following the 63.17m she threw last month in Ramona, Oklahoma in the USA.
The 25 year old was expected to make a shot at the 64.50m Paris Olympics entry standard but failed to find her form as she could only throw 54.03 in her third attempt after fouling her first two throws.
Onyekwere, however, was cool and calm and her 61.35m personal season’s best in the third round was enough to push to the second position behind Yaimé Perez of Cuba whose 68.31 first round throw was enough to guarantee her the first position.
With her second placing effort, Onyekwere has now extended her head to head record to 9-4 against Amaechi and it is the second time in a little over a month that the Commonwealth Games queen would be finishing ahead of the reigning African Games champion.
