2025 Diamond League: All Eyes on Ofili in Clash of Titans at Prefontaine Classic
Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili will take center stage this Saturday, July 5, at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, as she lines up in one of the most talent-packed women’s 100m races of the 2025 season. The event, part of the Wanda Diamond League, serves as a crucial tune-up ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
Ofili, 22, enters the race with a season and personal best of 10.87 seconds, achieved earlier this year in Texas. She has also twice clocked 10.78 seconds in wind-aided conditions—first in 2024 in a pre-Olympic meet with a marginal tailwind of 2.1m/s, and again this year in Texas—demonstrating her readiness to legally dip under the 10.80 barrier.
Her appearance in Eugene comes after a turbulent 2024 Olympic campaign. Though she made her Olympic debut in Paris, Ofili was denied the opportunity to compete in the 100m, the event she had focused on all season, due to an administrative oversight by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
The omission sparked widespread criticism and left the sprinter determined to prove her worth on the global stage.
Now, she faces a field brimming with world-class talent—each with their own accolades and ambitions viz Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, the reigning Olympic champion and second fastest woman in 2025 with a time of 10.75 seconds as well as USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson, the 2023 World Champion with a personal best of 10.65 seconds who is looking to reclaim her dominance after a slow start to the season.
Others are world leader, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, the Olympic bronze medallist from the USA, African record holder from Cote d’Ivoire, the legendary Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, who at 36 remains a formidable force and a sentimental favorite and the Clayton twins, Tina and Tia, from Jamaica.
Tina, the World U20 champion ran a personal best of 10.81 seconds last month to win the Jamaican championships while Tia holds a personal best of 10.86.
Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, the European champion with a personal best of 10.83 seconds, and Twanisha Terry of the USA with a personal best of 10.82 seconds complete the star-studded cast.
