‘2025 Was Just the Beginning’: Israel Okon Reflects on Breakthrough Year, Vows to Grow Stronger in 2026

Nigerian sprint sensation Israel Okon has described 2025 as one of the most unforgettable seasons of his life, while vowing to build on the strong foundation laid last year as he embarks on a new chapter in 2026.

In a heartfelt New Year message shared on his Facebook page, Okon expressed gratitude to God for guiding him through a season filled with milestones.

‘As I look back on 2025, I can only say thank You, God, for everything. This year has been one of the most unforgettable seasons of my life and career as a Nigerian runner. From the beginning of the year until now, I’ve seen God’s hand in every step, every race, and every opportunity,’ he wrote.

Okon’s achievements in 2025 were remarkable. He ‘became a world record holder, signed a major sponsorship deal with Adidas, and joined Auburn University to further his academic and athletic journey’. He also competed at the World Championships, reaching the semifinals and proving he belongs among the world’s elite.

On the track, Okon set an African U20 indoor record in February with a blistering 6.51 seconds in the 60m. He followed that up by breaking the Nigerian U20 100m record with a time of 10.03 seconds at the national championships in July, before being crowned Nigerian 100m champion.

In his first indoor season, he ran under 6.60 seconds five times, while outdoors he dipped inside 10.10 seconds on eight occasions.

Reflecting on these accomplishments, Okon credited his coaches, teammates, family, and supporters for their belief in him long before the world took notice.

‘2025 has laid a strong foundation, but this is only the beginning. With God leading the way, I’m focused, hungry, and ready for even greater things ahead. All glory to God. 2026 New Year, new vision, new dreams and mindset. Happy New Year Y’All,’ he declared.
