2nd Niger Delta Games: Delta Leads in Numbers, Edo Stays Ahead with Golds

Edo State has bounced back to retain the number one spot on the medals table at the 2nd Niger Delta Games, despite losing six gold medals after a few athletes were disqualified for over-age participation and identity fraud related to state of origin.

Edo leads with 33 gold medals, seven more than Delta, whose overall haul of 72 medals is the highest of the competition.

Notably, 10 of Edo’s gold medals came from weightlifting, with the trio of Goodnews Jacob, Beauty Akpore, and Esther Adebola accounting for nine of them, each winning three golds apiece.

Delta, just as in the first edition of the Games, has amassed the largest medal count.

Bayelsa, meanwhile, has slipped further behind Delta, settling into third place with 19 golds and a total of 45 medals.

Akwa Ibom and Rivers continue to battle closely in mid-table, while Imo has dropped further down the ladder after the latest update.

The competition remains tight, with several states jostling for position as the Games progress.

The medal standings highlight both the intensity of the rivalry and the determination of athletes across the Niger Delta, with Edo’s resilience and dominance in weightlifting ensuring they remain in front for now.
