2nd Niger Delta Games: Team Delta Sweep Three of Four Relay Finals, Akwa Ibom Shine in Men’s 4x400m

Team Delta showcased their supremacy on the track at the 2nd Niger Delta Games in Edo, sweeping three of the four relay finals on the closing day to cement their dominance in athletics.

In the Women’s 4x100m relay, 100m champion Peter Ejiro powered her team to gold alongside Vivian Iyanmu, Chinonso Odika, and Faith Chukwuka, storming home in 46.20 seconds. Bayelsa claimed silver in 46.70s, while Edo secured bronze in 46.77s.

The men’s 4x100m relay saw Delta blaze to victory once again, with Chibueze Osama setting the tone before Peter Onoriode, Saturday Godswill, and Gift Gowon executed flawless baton exchanges to stop the clock at 40.55s. Bayelsa finished second in 41.12s, with Rivers taking third in 41.26s.

Delta’s golden run continued in the Women’s 4x400m relay, where Mary Innocent, Treasure Okereke, Siviana Ossai, and Rejoice Anochie combined to deliver a commanding win in 3:38.68s.

The only relay gold to escape Delta’s grasp came in the Men’s 4x400m, where Team Akwa Ibom produced a sensational performance. David Udoh led the charge, combining with Mfoniso Bassey, Edidiong Udotong, and Faithwin Essien to clock 3:14.87s. Delta followed closely in 3:15.26s, with Bayelsa taking bronze in 3:15.86s.

Delta’s sweep of the relays capped a remarkable campaign, having also won the 4x100m mixed relay earlier in the Games.

It means sprint stars Peter Ejiro and Chibueze Osama each leave Edo with four gold medals apiece, triumphing in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, and 4x100m mixed relay.

In total, Team Delta clinched 20 gold medals in athletics, underlining their superiority and confirming their status as the powerhouse of the event at the 2nd Niger Delta Games.
