6th Islamic Solidarity Games: Nigeria Sixth on Medal Table as Wrestling and Athletics Set Begin in Riyadh
Team Nigeria’s wrestling and track and field squads have touched down in Riyadh for the ongoing sixth Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia, as the nation looks to improve its standing on the medal table.
The track and field events are scheduled to begin on Monday, November 17, and will run until Thursday, November 20, while the wrestling competition kicks off a day later on Tuesday, November 18, and concludes on Friday, November 21.
Their arrival marks a crucial phase for Nigeria, which currently sits sixth overall with 14 medals, six gold, five silver, and three bronze.
Nigeria’s medal haul has so far come entirely from weightlifting, with all six gold medals, four of the five silver, and all three bronze medals earned in the sport.
Despite this, Nigeria remains the second-best African team at the Games, trailing Egypt, who occupy fifth place with 30 medals, including 10 gold, seven silver, and 13 bronze.
Turkey leads the medal standings with a commanding 107 medals, comprising 58 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze. Uzbekistan follows in second place with 51 medals (15 gold, 19 silver, and 17 bronze), while Iran are third with 42 medals (11 gold, 12 silver, and 19 bronze).
Meanwhile, the taekwondo competition began on Saturday and will run until Monday, adding further excitement to the packed schedule of events in Riyadh.
