7 Premier League records Ndidi and Iwobi can set, equal or extend this weekend
The sixth round of games in the Premier League will be played this weekend with two Nigerian athletes expected to not only be in action but also set, equal or extend seven records set by Nigerians in the competition.
While Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi can set, equal or extend four of the seven records, Alex Iwobi of Fulham can achieve three.
Ndidi will be visiting the Emirates stadium with the Foxes when they face Arsenal on Saturday and if the 27-year-old makes the starting line-up, he can extend his records as the Nigerian with the most tackles in the history of the Premier League.
The Leicester City midfielder has made 16 tackles this season in five games and 710 overall in 197 appearances in the competition.
The 27 year old can also extend his record as the Nigerian that has made the most interceptions in Premier League history. He has made just four interceptions this season, six behind Ola Aina of Nottingham Forest but the former KRC of Belgium player tops overall with 394.
Ndidi can also extend two unwanted records by a Nigerian in the competition. He is joint record holder holder with Shola Ameobi and Celestine Babayaro as the dirties Eagles in Premier League history. The Leicester City man can become the sole owner of the record if he is red carded at the Emirates stadium.
He has also committed the most errors that led to goals and a repeat on Saturday will push those errors to four while Iwobi currently sits behind him in second with two.
Iwobi has played 423 minutes of Premier League football this season to sit third behind his Fulham compatriot, Calvin Bassey (450) and Ndidi (435) of Leicester City.
The 28-year-old has however played more minutes (17,232) than not just the duo in Premier League history but also all other Nigerians who has ever featured in the competition.
The former Arsenal man also the record as the Nigerian with the most assists in Premier League history with 30. He can extend this against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday.
He has never bagged an assist against Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi’s club but has scored twice in four appearances in the competition.
Iwobi has been subbed off twice in five appearances so far this term. If he gets subbed off at the City Ground on Saturday, it will be his 110th time in 259 games in the competition and it is the most by a Nigerian.
