CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United draw Young Africans Sports Club of Tanzania
As North African derby highlights quarterfinals draw
Reigning Nigeria league champion, Rivers United have drawn Young Africans Sports Club of Tanzania in the quarterfinal of the CAF Confederation Cup following Wednesday’s draw.
In the draws conducted by former Black Stars of Ghana player, Samuel Opoku Nti, Rivers United will host the Tanzanians in the first leg on April 23 at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo with the second leg taking place seven days later at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The winner of the two legged encounters will play Pyramids FC of Egypt and South African side, Marumo Gallants.
Rivers United (10 points) finished second behind ASEC Mimosas (13 points) of Ivory Coast in the group stage while Young Africans topped their group via goal difference ahead of Tunisian side, US Monastir who both finish on 13 points each.
Meanwhile, a North African derby pitting Algeria’s USM Alger and Morocco’s AS FAR, will be the highlight of the last eight fixtures
FAR, according to CAF website, is the only team in the last eight which has previously won the competition, having been crowned champions in 2005. This was also the first time that the Moroccans were making it into the group stages since the 2006 season.
They continue their campaign for one more continental piece of silverware with the first leg being a trip to Algiers.
