Wind denies Oghenebrume sub-10 seconds 100m time!
Alaba Akintola wins at Michael Johnson Invitational
A 2.3m/s tail wind has denied Godson Oghenebrume the chance to make history at the 13th Nigerian man to break the 10 seconds barrier in the 100m event.
The Louisiana State University, LSU student-athlete Saturday ran an impressive 9.97 to win the blue ribband event at the LSU Alumni Gold meet hosted at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The 19 year old came into the event with a 10.12 lifetime best and a 10.13 personal season’s best but sped into a territory only 12 Nigerians have ever legally made inroad into with Favour Ashe the last Nigerian to do so.
Oghenebrume also achored the LSU 4x100m relay to a 38.36 season’s best at the same meeting.
Interestingly, it was at this same event last year Favour Ofili sped to a 10.90 finish in the 100m which was however rendered illegal by a 4.2m/s tail wind.
Ofili, who is conspicuosly absent at the LSU Alumni Gold this year would prove seen days later that wind or no wind, she was capable of breaking the 11 seconds barrier by scorching to a legal 10.93 finish at the LSU Invitational at the same stadium and same track.
At the Michael Johnson Inviatational, Alaba Akintola ran the fastest 100m time of the day (10.14) to finish top of the 100m classification.
It is a personal season’s best for the 21 year old Nigerian.
