Osimhen gunning to become first African and third Napoli player to win Serie A single season top scorer award

Victor Osimhen will be seeking to score his second goal in five meetings against Fiorentina when the two teams clash Sunday at the Diego Maradona stadium in Naples in their Serie A matchweek 34 fixture.

The Nigerian scored the equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Udinese midweek that sealed and delivered Napoli their first Scudetto in 33 years.

The 24 year old also became the highest scoring African ever in a single Serie A season and joint top scoring African in the history of the competition.

Osimhen seems not done with making history yet as he set his eyes on becoming not just the first African to end a single Serie A season as its top scorer but also the third Napoli player to do so.

The former Lille of France forward is also gunning to become the first Napoli player to emerge top scorer and win the Scudetto the same season.

His 22 goals in 27 games are the most scored so far by a player in the Serie A so far this season, three more than Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez who is the closest to him.

If he scores this Sunday, he will become the stand alone African top scorer in the history of the competition.

He has scored 46 times in 78 appearances in the competition, same as George Weah of Liberia who netted 46 times in 114 games for AC Milan.

If Osimhen ends up as the top scorer, he will equal the feat performed by two South Americans for Napoli.

Edinson Cavani was Serie A top scorer in the 2012/13 season with 29 goals while Gonzalo Higuain netted 36 goals to win the Capocannoniere in the 2015/16 season.
