Osimhen becomes first African player in Serie A’s 125-year history to win the Golden Boot

Victor osimhen ended his third season in the Serie A with a Scudetto and top scorer honour as his reward.

He also becomes the first African player in the 125-year history of the Italian top-flight to win the Serie A Golden Boot.

The Nigerian scored in Napoli’s 2-0 defeat of Sampdoria in his final game of the 2022/23 season to take his total haul this term to 26 goals in 32
appearances, five more than second placed Lautaro Martinez.

It was also his fifth goal in four games against the relegated visitors.

The 24 year old scored 17 of his 26 goals this year and it is a feat no big-5 European leagues player has done better (17 goals also for Lacazette and Kane).
Osimhen has also become the first Napoli player to emerge as Scudetto winner and top scorer in the same Serie A season.

In the course of the season, he became the first Nigerian to score the most goals (21) in a single Serie A season, supplanting the 20 Simmy Nwankwo scored
for Crotone.

He also became the first African top scorer in a single season Serie A season, overtaking Samuel Eto’o who netted 21 times for Inter Milan in the 2010/11
season.

Osimhen also became the top scoring African ever in the history of the Serie A after overtaking the 46 George Weah scored for AC Milan.

Meanwhile, Osimhen has seen his iconic protective face mask copied by children all over the city, so the Napoli striker naturally had a version for his daughter ahead of the game against Sampdoria.

As is tradition, Napoli players came out for the final match of the campaign with their children and Osimhen had a special surprise, as his baby daughter was
wearing a miniature version of his face mask.

The mask has become his trademark and is worn by children all over Naples eager to copy their hero, while even mopeds, cars and trucks are painted with a
mask shape in his honour.
