Liverpool 3-1 Leicester City: Iheanacho misses chance to be outright top scoring African in Carabao Cup, rated below average

Kelechi Iheanacho failed to score against Liverpool for the 11th time across all competitions when he fired blanks in his club, Leicester City’s 3-1 loss at Anfield to Liverpool in a Carabao Cup tie Wednesday evening.

It was the Nigerian’s second game against Liverpool in the competition since he scored in the 8-7 penalty shootout loss at Anfield in December 2021.

The 27 year old who has scored 10 goals in the competition in 24 appearances has now failed to move past the trio of Algerian, Riyad Mahrez, Didier Drogba of Cote D’Ivoire and DR Congo’s Benik Afobe who have all scored 10 goals each to share the top scorer’s slot with the Nigerian.

Meanwhile, Iheanacho has been rated below average in the game Liverpool came from a goal down to win the game.

Influential Leicester City-based newspaper, Leicester Mercury rated the former Man City player four out of a possible 10 marks.

‘Not his night, but neither was it his game, with City trying to play on the counter. He didn’t have the speed to contribute to those attacks, and when it came to his feet, he often rushed his offload. There was one superb back-heel though, the touch of the match,’ wrote the newspaper about the Nigerian.

Compatriot, Wilfred Ndidi was rated above average and one the best Leicester City players on the field despite coming on as a 57th minute substitute for
Cesare Casadei.

‘Wilfred Ndidi had the best chance for the equaliser when he raced through at the end, but couldn’t get the ball out of his feet. Struggling to make his mark like he did at the weekend, but he was calm on the ball,’ the newspaper wrote and gave the midfielder six out of 10.
