Tima Godbless and Ella Onojuvwevwo may have been ruled out of the 23rd African Athletics Championships after they were both missing when the team arrived in Douala, Cameroon, venue of the Championships on Thursday.
Sportsnow.com.ng gathered that both athletes disappeared after the Nigerian Championships ended Tuesday in Benin City and were unreachable before the team travelled Thursday.
According to sources, the athletes hinted the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, of their intention to rest so that they can prepare for the Olympics but officials of the federation refused their pleas.
It was also gathered that the federation is pulling all the stops to have Onojuvwevwo in Cameroon as she is expected to spearhead the women 4x400m’s bid to qualify for the Olympics.
Meanwhile, six coaches arrived Douala with the team. They are five men and one woman. The men are Deji Aliu, Solomon Aliyu, Kayode Yahya, Kola and Gabriel Opuana while Endurance Ojokolo, one of only two athletes (after Mary Onyali) to successfully defend the 100m crown (2002 and 2004) at the event, is the only woman in the team.
