Messi moves further clear of Ronaldo as player who has scored at most major international tournaments

Lionel Messi scored in the early hours of Wednesday to not only secure Argentina’s passage to the final of the 2024 Copa America but also extended his record as the player who has scored at the most major international tournaments.

Messi has now scored at ten separate tournaments to tie with Ronaldo but has netted 27 goals in those tournaments, starting with his goal in Argentina’s 6-0 drubbing of Serbia and Montenegro in a 2006 FIFA World Cup game at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Like Messi, Ronaldo has incredibly scored at 10 different tournaments starting with Euro 2004 and topped the list earlier this month.

If he had managed to score for Portugal at this summer’s Euro 2024 he would have moved to 11, but it was not to be as the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward exited without a goal in regulation and extra time.
