Paris 2024 Olympics: Super Falcons seek second win in 11 games at the Olympics, face Spain on Sunday
Super Falcons of Nigeria will be seeking for their second win in their 11th game at the Olympics since 2000 when they made their debut in Sydney, Australia.
Coach Randy Waldrum and his girls will be hoping to convert at least a few of the chances they will create when they face Spain at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Sunday evening.
The Super Falcons lost their opening game of the Paris 2024 Olympics to Brazil on Thursday and will be looking to avoid defeat when they face Spain.
The Nigerian Ladies lost 3-1 to China in their first ever game at the Olympics in September 2000 at the Bruce Stadium in Canberra, Australia with Perpetua Ijeoma Nkwocha netting the Super Falcons first Olympics goal.
The Super Falcons lost all three games in Australia but managed a win four years later in Athens, Greece when Vera Okolo scored the only goal of the game against Japan at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Athens.
Since that August date, the Super Falcons have lost all the games they played including the three at the 2008 Olympics and their opening group game at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
A win on Sunday will rekindle the Falcons’ hope of a second ever quarterfinal berth after their first in 2004, losing 2-1 to Germany with Mercy Akide scoring Nigeria’s goal.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade believes the team can spring a surprise against the reigning world champions on Sunday.
‘We missed quite a few chances against Brazil, and they took their chance. We will do our best to take our chances against Spain on Sunday,’ she said.
