Oyesade Olatoye exits first Olympics as 29th best

Oyesade Olatoye’s adventure to her first Olympics has ended with the Nigerian throwing 66.41m to place 14th in her group of 16 and 29th in the overall classification.

The 27 year old’s mark, 66.41m, way outside the 71.88m lifetime best she set at the start of June is also way outside the 73.00m qualification standard set for the event by World Athletics.

The Nigerian opened her historic campaign with a no throw, threw 64.36m in the second before improving to 66.41m in her third and final throw to exit the competition.

Olatoye has however made history as the first Nigerian woman to compete in the hammer throw at the Olympics.

The two-time African Athletics Championships and two-time African Games medalist will now turn her focus to next year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan where she will be hoping to make history as the first Nigerian hammer thrower to qualify for the final after dropping out at the qualifying stage in 2022 and 2023.
