Yego throws himself into third Olympics Javelin throw final

Reigning African Javelin throw champion, Julius Yego of Kenya is back in the Olympics final for the third after stumbling out in the qualifying phase three years ago in Tokyo, Japan.

The 35 years old threw a distance of 85.97m to secure an automatic ticket to Thursday evening.

He made his first appearance in the final 12 years ago in London but finished 11th in the final classification with his 77.15m second round throw.

The Kenyan did better four years later in Rio De Janiero, Brazil where he made history as the first African to get to the podium with his silver medal win, one year after he became the second African to win a world title in the event.

Yego’s bid for a third straight final appearance did not go according to plan as he finished 24th in the final classification with his third round throw of 77.34m.

The African record holder (92.72m) seems to be coming back to form at the right time with the 85.97m personal season’s best he has thrown in qualifying. It is his best throw since 2019 when he threw 87.73m to win his second of three African Games titles.
