World Athletics Rankings: Amusan, Enekwechi still Nigeria’s top ranked woman and man

Despite dropping in the 100m hurdles and women’s overall ranking, Tobi Amusan is still the top ranked Nigerian with her 13.71 ranking score.

The 27-year-old dropped from fifth to seventh in the 100m hurdles world ranking and from 52nd to 82nd in the overall women’s ranking following the latest World rankings update by World Athletics.

Expectedly, long jumper, who finished fifth in the event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is next to Amusan while Favour Ofili, the 200m finalist in Paris also retained her pre-Olympics position as the third top ranked Nigerian woman.

While Ruth Usoro also retained her fourth position, another long jumper, Prestina Ochonogor looks to be the biggest mover in terms of position, moving from eighth to fifth, supplanting in the process 400m runner, Elo Joseph, sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma and high jumper, Temitope Adeshina.

For the men, Shot putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is still the top ranked Nigerian. The 31 year old cemented his number one status with his sixth place finish in the event at the Olympics in Paris.

Second is 400m runner, Samuel Ogazi who has been the revelation of the year and who has is the second Nigerian quartermiler after Innocent Egbunike to run inside 45 seconds at least six times. Egbunike broke 45 seconds 12 times in 1987.

Third is 400m barrier runner, Ezekiel Nathaniel who exited at the semifinals of the event in Paris while Kanyinsola Ajayi, who also exited at the semis is the fourth most ranked Nigerian man and number one in the 100m, ahead of Usheoritse Itsekiri who the fifth most ranked Nigerian is.

Ajayi actually dropped from number two to fourth, switching spot with Ogazi whose appearance in the final of the 400m event gave him an additional placing score of 215 points.
