2024/25 Premier League: Awoniyi looking to score his second opening game goal in a row for Forest
Taiwo Awoniyi will be looking to become the first Nigerian to score in his club’s opening game of a season in a row when his side, Nottingham Forest host Bournemouth at the City Ground on Saturday.
Awoniyi scored in Forest’s opening game of last season, the 2-1 loss at Arsenal but the Nigerian will be hoping he not only scores, but also wants his first win in three games against the visitors.
The Cherries remain one of the 11 clubs the Nigerian is yet to score against since he made his permanent move to Forest from Liverpool in the 2022/23 season and will be keen to make it 10 Premier League clubs he has scored against.
For the record, Awoniyi has netted thrice against Arsenal, Southampton and West Ham, twice against Chelsea and once against Liverpool, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Man United.
The Nigerian has scored 16 goals and provided four assists in 47 Premier League games since he joined Forest. His six of last season made him the club’s third best scorer after Chris Wood (14) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (8) despite spending more of the season on the treatment table.
He was the club’s top scorer with 10 goals in his first season at the club and has been Nigeria’s top scorer in the competition for two seasons in a row.
