Ndidi begins battle to become first player to end an EPL season as top tackler three times

Wilfred Ndidi is back in the Premier League and the Nigerian will be in action Monday night at the Kings Power stadium where his club, Leicester City, back from a season’s sojourn in the Sky Bet Championship, will host Tottenham Hotspur.

The Foxes will rely on their ever-reliable defensive midfielder, Ndidi, to resume a role in which he has been named the best twice and second once in his six years in the competition.

The 27-year-old will be bidding to become the first man in Premier League history to end the season top of the tackles chart and will hope his tackles and interceptions can help the Foxes retain their Premier League status.

The Nigerian joined Leicester City in January 2017 and ended the season with just 68 tackles to end as the joint 41st best.

He however rose from there to first in his first full season with 138 tackles, 21 more than Idrissa Gueye who won the previous season.

Ndidi also edged Gueye in the 2018/19 season by just one tackle, 143 to 142 and was second in the 2019/20 season behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka by just one tackle (129 to 128).

The former KRC Genk of Belgium player will now be seeking a place in the competition’s history boos as the first man to end the season as best tackler three times.

He is currently tied at two with former Fulham player, João Palhinha who has moved to Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian is set for his 193rd appearance in the competition as well as his 179th start.

He is also looking to win his fifth game and probably score his first goal in 11 appearances across all competitions against Tottenham.
