Enekwechi becomes first Nigerian thrower to qualify for Diamond League final

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has sealed his spot as one of the six athletes that will compete in the Shot Put event at the Diamond League final next weekend at the Allianz Memorial van Damme in Brussels, Belgium.

The reigning African Games and African Championships champion finished sixth with his 20.52m fifth round throw at the Weltklase Diamond League meeting in Zurich to end up as the fifth best in the rankings with 16 points.

The 31-year-old has now made history as the first Nigerian thrower and third Nigerian field eventer after Tosin Oke and Ese Brume to compete in the final of athletics premier one day series.

He is also the fifth Nigerian across all disciplines to make it to the final after Tobi Amusan, Blessing Okagbare, Oke and Brume.

The Paris 2024 Olympics finalist will now be seeking for a miracle of sort to throw himself on the Diamond League podium ahead three-time Olympic champion and two-time World champion, Ryan Crouser and such 22m throwers as Joe Kovacs, Otterdahl Payton and Fabbri Leonardo.
