Eagles Sunday Review: Lookman nets fourth Serie A winner for Atalanta, Onyeka makes winning debut, Troost-Ekong wins first point

Dessers provides seventh goal involvement, Moses provises first assist, Akor scores own goal

Ademola Lookman made his 2024/25 Serie A debut for Atalanta and scored what proved to be the winner for the Bergamo side in their 3-2 defeat of Fiorentina at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday.

The Nigerian, also making his Serie A start for the season had provided Mateo Retegui the assist that drew Atalanta level on 21 minutes after Lucas Martínez Quarta had given the visitors the lead on 15 minutes.

Moise Kean restored Fiorentina’s lead on 32 minutes, but Charles De Ketelaere equalized for Atalanta on the dot of 45 minutes before the Nigerian, just a minute later scored what ended as the winner.

Lookman has now scored four winners in the Serie A for Atalanta with the first coming against the same Fiorentina in October 2022. He scored the only goal of the game.

US Sassuolo was the Nigerian’s next victim 13 days later, netting the second goal in a 2-1 win at the Gewiss Stadium.

The third winner came in December 2023, netting the only goal in the 1-0 defeat of Lecce also at the Gewiss Stadium.

Outside the Serie A, Lookman also netted all the goals (a hat-trick) that gave Atalanta their biggest victory ever-a Europa League trophy.

In Germany, Frank Onyeka was on for 83 minutes on his debut in the Bundesliga as his club, Augsburg defeated St. Pauli 3-1 at the WWK Arena.

Onyeka left Brentfod on transfer deadline day on a season long loan deal and has hit the ground running with a solid display on his debut.

In France, Akor Adams scored an own goal as Rennes defeated Montpellier 3-0 at the Roazhon Park. The 24-year-old has scored once, provided one assist and scored an own goal in four Ligue 1 games this season.

At the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, Moses Simon bagged his first assist of the season but it was not enough as his side fell to a 91st minute Keito Nakamura to lose their first game of the season.

The Nigerian has scored twice in four games this season.

At the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Stadi in Kasimpasa, Turkey, Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce went, saw and conquered 2-0 without the injured Nigerian, Bright Osayi-Samuel.

In Scotland, Cyriel Dessers had his seventh goal involvement of the young season to help Rangers secure a 1-0 win at Dundee United by providing the assist for Tom Lawrence to score the only goal of the game at Tannadice Park.

The Nigerian has scored five goals and provided two assists this season with three of the goals coming in the Scottish Premiership.

His compatriot, Leon Balogun was left on the bench for the entire duration of the game.

At the Al Hazm Club Stadium in Ar Rass, Saudi Arabia, Super Eagles captain was on for all 90 minutes for the third straight game as his Saudi Po League side, Al Kholood earned their first point of the season following their 3-3 draw with visiting Al Orobah.
