Boniface becomes 39th Nigerian to score in the UEFA Champions League
Victor Boniface netted his first goal on his second UEFA Champions League appearance to become the 39th Nigerian to score out of over a 100 who have featured in the competition.
The 23-year-old smashed in a rebounded effort to give Bayer Leverkusen their opening goal of game against Samuel Chukwueze’s AC Milan at the Bay Arena on Tuesday evening.
The forward, who netted five times in four qualifying games for the competition will now be looking to score more with Obafemi Martins and Victor Osimhen’s nine goals in the competition his obvious target.
He has become the second Nigerian to score in the competition this year after Victor Olatunji who scored once in Sparta Prague’s defeat of Austrian side, RB Salzburg at the epet Arena last month.
Two other Nigeria-born stars were also on target on Tuesday.
‘Ibadan boy’ Karim Adeyemi scored thrice as Borussia Dortmund whitewashed Scottish champion, Celtic 7-1 at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany while Bukayo Saka was also on target in Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat of PSG at the Emirates stadium in north London.
Adeyemi has now made history as the second German player to score three goals in the first half of a Champions League match after Mario Gomez in November 2011 against Napoli (for Bayern).
