Herve Renard: Why I turned down the offer to coach the Super Eagles of Nigeria

Frenchman Herve Renard has revealed why he rejected the offer from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to replace Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Renard who has coached the Chipolopolo of Zambia twice, Ivory Coast, Morocco and Angola and was assistant manager to the Black Stars of Ghana between July 2007 to May 2008 reportedly told French sports daily, L’Equipe via Brila FM that he was tempted to take the offer.

‘I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed the pros and cons for several days, even weeks, before deciding to turn it down. It was the best offer I had received, but ultimately, it wasn’t the right fit for me,’ Renard was quoted to have said.

Following Renard’s rejection of the offer, the NFF went for Bruno Labbadia of Germany who was announced as the new coach of the Nigeria senior national team.

The German however issued a statement days later to accuse the NFF of announcing him as the coach when they have not concluded negotiations with him. He also rejected the offer.

The NFF have drafted in its technical director, Austin Equavoen as caretaker manager of the team.
