‘No team should be mistreated this way,’ Troost-Ekong says Eagles are back home safe and sound

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong says he is proud of the team after overcoming the Libyan torture for 20 hours.

The team was stranded in Libya after the ValueJet chartered flight was prevented from landing in Benghazi and diverted to a very small town, Al Al-Baqi .

The players and accompanying were left stranded at the airport without access to food, water and internet.

Some of the players had to sleep on chairs at the airport and a few others on the floor while another set stayed awake all through the night.

Following the outrage across the globe about the dehumanizing treatment meted out to the Super Eagles whose only offence was to honour the return leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against Libya.

The eventually left Libya after 20 hours of hell and Troost-Ekong was delighted they managed to escape from Libya in peace.

‘Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken.
‘Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome. I’ve seen a lot in my 10 years with this group, but nothing like this, an experience that has brought us even closer TOGETHER,’ he wrote on twitter and posted a video of their arrival in Libya and what they were going through.

‘The video was last night, 6 hours after the surprise landing in an abandoned airport with no food, drink or connection to let loved ones know we had arrived. Still finding a way to stay together, positive and fueling our spirit.

‘As things escalated, this time overcoming meant taking a stand for what’s right regardless of the consequences. No team should be mistreated this way. Football is about respect, and that starts by respecting ourselves.

‘My last words about this and I look forward to continuing our journey to the AFCON 2025 next month in November on the right way.

‘Our goal of doing the best for Nigerian football won’t ever change. Now time to chop swallow and rest,’ he wrote.
