Aribo extends Premier League winless run to 18 games, Onuachu 10
Joe Aribo was subbed on in the 60th minute for Adam Lallana but the Nigerian’s presence could not stop Southampton from crashing to their eighth defeat of the season and record extending 22nd in the Premier League since they defeated Leicester City 1-0 in March 2023.
The defeat was, however, Aribo’s seventh of the season in the eight appearances and 18th in a row since October 2022 when he featured for 64 minutes in the 1-0 defeat of Bournemouth away at the Vitality stadium.
Interestingly, the 28-year-old has won just thrice in 29 Premier League games since he made his debut in August 2022, and he has netted also just thrice with his third coming this season in the 3-2 loss to Leicester City.
Meanwhile, Paul Onuachu, Aribo’s compatriot at the club is also looking for his first Premier League win after 10 winless runs.
The 30-year-old who is yet to register a goal in 14 Premier League appearances and has had three cameo appearances totaling 446 minutes featured in the Saints’ 1-0 defeat of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in February 2023.
Onuachu may have found it difficult to score in the Premier League, but the former KRC Genk of Belgium netted 16 times in 19 appearances for his Belgian side in the first half of the 2022/23 season before joining Southampton in January of 2023.
He also netted 17 times in 26 games for Trabzonspor of Turkey while on loan last season.
