Shearer: ‘I thought Ndidi was a certain red card, he’s gone to hurt him there’

Opinions are still divided over whether Wilfred Ndidi should have been red carded for his rash challenge of Chelsea’s Cole Palmer in Saturday’s Premier League matchweek 12 fixtures at the King Power stadium.

The Nigerian Ndidi was somewhat lucky to remain on the pitch after the challenge which connected with the back of the attacker’s leg.

Ndidi was given a yellow card by the referee and pundits, including Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca are divided in their opinions.

Premier League legend and all-time top scorer, Alan Shearer believes the Nigerian should have been red carded.

‘I thought Ndidi’s was a certain red card, he’s gone to hurt him there,’ said Shearer who scored 260 goals in 441 appearances for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

Ashley Williams who featured in 241 Premier League matches for Everton and Swansea City told the BBC Ndidi’s tackle was naughty.

‘This one is a little bit naughty from Ndidi, looked worse in slo mo, you can see how high he actually catches Palmer. I’m not sure if that’s a red.’
Leicester City legend Gary Lineker however feels the decision could have potentially been given either way with very little complaints.

If Ndidi had been given the marching order, he would have moved above the trio of Shola Ameobi, Mikel Obi and Celestine Babayaro (two each) as the most red carded Nigerian player in Premier League history with three.
