Fulham 3-1 Brighton: Iwobi’s first Nigerian to win the official Premier League man of the match award in 2024/25 season

Alex Iwobi was named the official man of Thursday’s match between Fulham and Brighton at the Craven Cottage where the 28-year-old was the star of the show as his brace helped the Cottagers to a 3-1 defeat of the visiting Seagulls.

The Nigerian capitalised on Bart Verbruggen’s early error in the fourth minute to get the home side off to a flying start and cemented the Cottagers win with his brilliant curling strike to make it 3-1 on 87 minutes.

Iwobi had two shots on target, made one key pass and three successful dribbles and was named the man of the match by the official website of the Premier League.

He thus became the first ‘bonafide’ Nigerian to win the award this season.

His brace means he has now scored five goals in 14 Premier League games so far this season to equal his record goal tally for a season which he achieved in a Fulham chart last season, netting five goals in 30 appearances.

He also moved into eighth in the Nigerian all-time top scorers chart, supplanting Victor Anichebe who scored 26 goals in 204 appearances.

Iwobi will be keen to set a new, personal goal record for a Premier League season when he returns to one of his former clubs, Arsenal on Sunday. He will be looking to score his first goal against the Gunners in nine appearances since he left the Emirates stadium in the summer of 2019.
