Abuja City Half Marathon becomes third label road race in Nigeria as World Athletics finally lists Lagos City Marathon in 2025 calendar

The Abuja City Half Marathon has become the third road race to be granted a World Athletics Label status starting with this year’s edition scheduled to hold in Abuja in April.

The event has thus been listed on the World Athletics’ Label Road Races calendar for 2025, and it is one of the 85 races with Label status so far registered by the world governing body for the sport this year.

World Athletics Label Road Races are designated by World Athletics as the ‘leading road races around the world’ that adhere to superior standards in event organization, safety, runner experience, and anti-doping commitment.

The Okpekpe international 10km road race is the first road race to be granted a label status in 2015, eight years after World Athletics started the classification of leading road races across the globe.

The race grew from a bronze label race to silver and then the gold that it is now.

The Lagos City Marathon joined the list as the first Marathon race to be granted a label race in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the 10th edition of the Lagos City Marathon has been listed on the website of World Athletics as the 46th gold label road race that will hold this year.

Sportsnow.com.ng had revealed the Lagos City Marathon which has been scheduled to hold on the 15th of next month has not been listed among the label road races to hold this year but we can now confirm that the event has been listed after World Athletics upgraded the calendar.
