Kishane Thompson storms to 6.48 60m world lead, warns Lyles, Tebogo ahead of World Athletics Championships
Paris 2024 Olympic 100m silver medallist, Kishane Thompson sped to a new 6.48 seconds lifetime best on Saturday to win the men’s 60m final at the Central Hurdles, Relays and Field Events Meet at the GC Foster College in St. Catherine in southeast of Jamaica.
Thompson stormed out of the block in bullet-like fashion and powered home in 6.48 seconds into a -2.1m/s headwind to smash his 6.67 lifetime best and move on top of the world ranking in 2025, supplanting Barnabas Aggerh of Ghana who ran 6.52 Nashville, Tennessee, USA last week.
The Jamaican has now become the 47th man in the world to break 6.50 in the 60m event and he could run faster when he races at the Astana indoor meet on January 25 in Astana city, the capital of Kazakhstan.
There he will face Andre De Grasse, the Canadian Olympic champion, world champion and multiple winner of the Diamond League stages over the 60m.
Thompson’s time puts him fifth on the all-time list for Jamaica in the event trailing Ackeem Blake (6.42), Asafa Powell (6.44), Yohan Blake (6.45) and Lerone Clarke (6.47).
In the women’s 60m, Olympic 100m finalist Tia Clayton ran a personal best 7.14 to take top spot ahead of Natasha Morrison (7.18) and Jonielle Smith (7.23). Both Morrison and Smith also ran personal bests.
Clayton’s previous best was 7.18 done at the National Stadium last January.
