Ogunleye sets meeting record, world lead in Dortmund

Reigning Olympics Shot Put champion, Yemisi Ogunleye started her 2025 outdoor season in spectacular fashion at the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting in Dortmund, Germany on Saturday.

Silver medalist last year at the World indoors, the Nigeria-born German produced her best effort in the opening round with 18.98m, which was both a new meeting record and world lead.

Ogunleye, the first German to win an Olympic Shot Put title since Astrid Kumbernus did in 1996 also threw above 18m (18.80m and 18.76m) in the fourth and fifth round with German teammate Alina Kenzel second with a final round 18.16m while Jorinde van Klinken of the Netherlands was third with 17.46m.

Ogunleye will be looking to turn her silver to gold at the World indoors in China this March.

Meanwhile, former Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo also emerged champions in the long jump event where she set a new world lead.

Mihambo who opened with 6.44m in the first round, took proceeding of the event in the fourth with her 6.79m world lead.

Mikaelle Assani, also a German, was second with her 6.67m effort while Filippa Fotopoulou of Cyprus was third, equalling her personal best of 6.53m.
