Onuachu fires Southampton to first Premier League win in three months

Paul Onuachu was the hero for relegation threatened Southampton who defeated Ipswich Town 2-1 at Portman Road on Saturday. It was the gangling Nigerian’s second Premier League goal 0f 2025 and second in his last three appearances after scoring in the 3-2 loss at Nottingham Forest in January.

The Nigerian who made his sixth start in 14 appearances for the Saints so far this season struck with just three minutes left in regulation to restore the visitors’ lead after Liam Delap (31) restored parity for the homers after Joe Aribo had given Southampton the lead.

It was Onuachu’s second Premier League goal in 28 appearances since he joined Southampton in January 2023 from Belgian Jupiler Pro League side, KRC Genk.

The 30-year-old’s goal has now ensured a second Premier League win of the season in 24 games for Southampton and first in almost three months, precisely since November 2, 2024 when Adam Armstrong’s also scored late (85) to give his club a 1-0 win over Everton.

It is now the first time that Onuachu and Aribo will score in the same Premier League game for Southampton.
