‘First win, first three points under the new manager, it’s a new beginning for us’: Onuachu speaks on his second Premier League goal in 28 games

Paul Onuachu scored for the second time in his last three Premier League games to help his team, Southampton record their first Premier League win since the start of November 2024 and second overall in 24 games.

It was the Nigerian’s second Premier League goal of 2025 and first away from home.

The 30-year-old was delighted to score for the second time in three games after firing blanks in his 25 for the club he joined in January 2023 from Belgian side, KRC Genk.

Onuachu told BBC Match of The Day his goal was special for the team as he gave them the first three Premier League points under a new manager.

‘It’s special for the team, especially today. First win, first three points under the new manager. It’s a new beginning for us. We just have to keep fighting and see where we end up,’ he said and praised the team for showing strong character.

‘It was an intense game but towards the end of the first half we showed character. You have to fight and we fought and got the three points, very important.

“It doesn’t matter how we score, it’s about fighting to survive. Luckily the keeper passed it out and I had to be there to finish it.”

Onuachu is confident the club can kick on from today’s game.

‘Yeah, when you are in this situation as a team, even though you play good, you lose and it is difficult. But today, hopefully, it is a new beginning. It’s all about training and taking each game at a time. We try to fight to get points. That’s what we are here for, to fight, to try to survive.”
