AFN cancels its pre-Golden League competition, advises athletes to prepare for the main Golden League

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has cancelled one of its events earlier scheduled to hold this weekend.
The Federation, headed by Tonobok Ojuru Okowa, says its Pre-Golden League competition earlier scheduled to hold between tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday in Abuja has not only been postponed but outrightly cancelled.
Israel Inwang, the AFN Secretary General, did not give any reason for the cancelation in a letter sent to State Associations and other stakeholders.
The letter, titled: Postponement of Athletics Federation of Nigeria Pre-Golden League Competition, reads inter-alia: ‘I am directed to inform you that the Pre-Golden League Competition previously scheduled to hold on March 7-8, 2025 has been postponed.
‘Athletes are encouraged to continue training and prepare for the Golden League proper which will be announced to you in due course.
‘We deeply regret any inconveniences this change might have caused you and we equally appreciate your understanding in this matter’.
The letter did not state when the event will hold but advised athletes to prepare for the main Golden League, suggesting that the Pre-Golden League competition will not hold again.
This would be the third in less than three months the AFN would be postponing an event on the eve of the competition.
The Federation had earlier postponed its extraordinary congress and the Awoture Eleyea U15 competition last month.
