No more $50,000: Enugu City Marathon organizers adjust prize money

Organizers of the Enugu City Marathon have made a downward adjustment to the prize monies for the first 42.195km race in the coal city in May.
Just a little over a week ago, the prize money structure for the race on its official website revealed elite runners will be earning as much as $50,000 for first place while the winners of the Nigerian category will go home with N2m.
According to the website, the total prize purse for the elite athletes will be $256,000 with second and third place earning $20,000 and $15,000 respectively while the eighth placed runner will go home with $1,000.
For the ‘Nigerian runners,’ a total prize purse of N11m was on offer with second and third place finishers earning N1,5m and N1m respectively.
A check on the website reveals a downward adjustment with a total prize purse now $68,000 with the top three earning $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.
Instead of eight, only the first five will be now be awarded prizes with fourth and fifth place finishers earning $3,000 and $1,000.
For the Nigerian runners, there will now be a total prize purse of N16m instead of the N11m earlier advertised.
Like the elite, only the top five will also be awarded prize money with the winner going home with N3m, instead of the N2m initially posted on the race’s website.
The second place finisher to the fifth will now earn N2m, N1.5m, N1m and N500,000 respectively.
